Weeks 4 & 5

Craft and Structure
For the next two weeks, we will be focusing on the category Craft and Structure.  There are three anchor standards in this category.

Read
Look at pages 53-111 for literature and pages 206-258 for informational text standards.  Begin to think about which types of text (literary or informational) you will be teaching in your classroom in the next two weeks.

Plan for Application
Your task is to choose one of the anchors to focus on with your students.  Create a lesson plan using your chosen text.   You will implement three types of instruction in sequence over the week:  a demonstration day, collaborative engagement (one or two days), and independent application (one or two days).  These three terms are referenced at the beginning of each anchor standard.  HINT:   You don’t have to start from scratch with your planning, you could adapt a lesson you’ve taught in the past.  Use the Common Core Lesson Book to help you incorporate the standards into a lesson you already teach.  Once you have your anchor chosen, find that standard in the book and you will find many strategies to choose from as well as graphic organizers you can use in your lesson design.
Tell Us Your Plan (Post by end of Week 4)
Briefly tell about the lesson you will be teaching.  Be sure to include which anchor standard you are focusing on, what type of text you are using, and the TITLE of the text you have chosen.  What are your expected outcomes for this lesson?
Apply
Put your plan into action in your classroom.

Reflect (Post by end of Week 5 by replying to your own Plan Post)
Now that you have taught your lesson, tell us how it went.  Here are some questions you can think about as you write your reflection:  What strengths did you notice?  Were there any components you would like to change?  Did you have to the instruction at any point for your students’ understanding?  What strategies worked best? (You don’t need to answer all of these questions; they are included to help you reflect.)

Interact
Over the course of the two weeks, don’t forget to respond to another participant’s plan or reflection.
